It’s been an interesting week for cosmetics companies and photography

First of all, we heard reports that the Advertising Standards Authority in the UK had banned adverts featuring Julia Roberts (For L’Oreal/Lancome) and Christy Turlington (for Maybelline) because they had been AIRBRUSHED beyond reality. Then this rather interesting news today in the guardian.co.uk about cosmetic company MAC using artist Cindy Sherman as “model” in their new campaign. The irony here being that the makeup isn’t used in a typically beautiful fashion, similar to Sherman’s work, where she uses herself as a model yet transforms herself as a parody of the real, or an aspect of culture.

Question – did they ask Sherman to take the photographs, and if not, why not?
